This cow gestation calculator works out when a cow is due to calve. Enter a breeding date and it gives the expected calving date with a likely window around it. Enter a calving date and it works back to the breeding date, or enter bull-in and bull-out dates to estimate a calving season. It is free, runs entirely in your browser, and needs no sign-up. The default values show a cow bred on 1 July 2026, due on 10 April 2027, with a likely window from 6 to 19 April 2027. The default gestation length is 283 days, the beef cattle average, and you can change it in More options for your breed. The result is a planning estimate, so ask your veterinarian about any concern.

How to use the cow gestation calculator

  1. Open the Calculate menu and choose “Calving date from breeding date”, “Calving season from bull-in and bull-out” or “Breeding date from calving date”.
  2. For a single cow, type the date in Breeding date (AI or bull service) as year-month-day, for example 2026-07-01.
  3. For a breeding season, type the dates in Bull-in date and Bull-out date in the same format.
  4. To work backwards, type the date in Calving (due) date.
  5. Open More options to change Average gestation length (days). You can also set Shortest gestation in the window (days) and Longest gestation in the window (days).
  6. Read the result rows, such as Expected calving date, Earliest likely calving date and Latest likely calving date. Check How it was calculated to see each step with your own numbers.
  7. In the first two modes a table lists a breeding date for every 7th day of the month, with its expected calving date and likely window.

The example buttons above the form are “Breeding 1 July”, “Bulls in 1 Jun – 15 Aug” and “Calving 10 April”. Copy result copies the result lines with a link, and Copy link copies the page address, which holds every input. Print / save as PDF prints the inputs, results, steps and date. Reset restores the default values.

How long is a cow pregnant?

Beef cattle gestation averages 283 days, the length Oklahoma State University Extension uses for its gestation table. Breed averages in USDA-MARC data run from about 281 days (Holstein) and 282 days (Angus) to 293 days (Brahman), and individual cows vary further, so the tool shows a window rather than a single exact date. The result row “Gestation length” shows the 283 days as 40 weeks 3 days. If the length you enter falls outside about 270 to 300 days, the tool shows a warning, so check the number.

How do you calculate a cow’s due date?

The expected calving date is the breeding date plus the gestation length. With the default values, 1 July 2026 plus 283 days gives Saturday 10 April 2027. The default window is 281 to 293 days after breeding, which is Thursday 8 April 2027 to Tuesday 20 April 2027 for the same cow.

Is this a cow pregnancy calculator or a cattle pregnancy calculator?

It is a due-date tool. A cow pregnancy calculator or cattle pregnancy calculator like this one starts from a breeding date you already know and counts forward. It cannot tell you whether a cow is pregnant. Only a pregnancy check by your veterinarian or a test can do that.

Is there a cow gestation chart or table?

Yes. Under the result the tool shows a cattle gestation table, also called a gestation chart for cattle: a breeding date for every 7th day of the month you entered, the expected calving date for each, and the likely window. The table follows the average gestation length you set, so a cow gestation period calculator for another breed only needs a new value in More options. It is a table, not a picture chart.

How is a calving season worked out from bull dates?

The first calves are due about 283 days after the bull goes in, and the last calves are due about 283 days after he comes out. A bull that goes in on 1 June 2026 and comes out on 15 August 2026 gives a calving range of Thursday 11 March 2027 to Tuesday 25 May 2027. The calving period spreads over about the same 75 days as the breeding season, and the tool warns you when a season is longer than 120 days.

Can the calculation run backwards from a calving date?

Yes. Choose “Breeding date from calving date” and enter the calving (due) date. The tool subtracts the gestation length to find the breeding date. A calving date of 10 April 2027 gives Wednesday 1 July 2026, which matches the forward example above, and a breeding window from 21 June to 3 July 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the tool show a range instead of one date?

The expected date is the average, and cows vary. The likely window shows the earliest and latest dates that fit the shortest and longest gestation lengths you set.

What does the warning about gestation length mean?

The tool shows it when the gestation length you typed is outside the usual range for cattle, about 270 to 300 days. A number like that is often a typing error, so check it.

How do I set the calculator for my breed?

Open More options and change Average gestation length (days) to the figure you use for your breed. The default of 283 days is the beef cattle average. The shortest and longest values must bracket the average.

What format should the dates be in?

Type dates as year-month-day, for example 2026-07-01. Use the same format in the breeding, bull-in, bull-out and calving boxes.

Is the calculator free, and is anything I type uploaded?

Yes, the calculator is free and needs no sign-up. It runs entirely in your browser, and nothing you type is uploaded.

Can I use the results in commercial work such as quotes and bids?

Yes. Results, steps and printouts may be used in any work, including commercial work such as records, quotes and invoices. No attribution is needed.

Should I rely on this instead of my veterinarian?

No. The note under the result says it is a planning estimate based on an average gestation length, and that individual animals vary. Ask your veterinarian about any concern.
