This square foot to acre converter changes an area in square feet into acres, and it works the other way too. Choose a direction, type the area, pick its unit, and the tool shows the result in acres, square feet, square yards, square meters, hectares, square miles and square kilometers. It is free, runs entirely in your browser, and needs no sign-up. Use it as a sq ft to acres converter, an acres to square feet calculator, or an ac to sf converter when you do not want to divide by hand. Every result rests on one fixed figure: 1 acre equals 43,560 square feet. A table of common acreages and a list mode for many values are included.

How to use the Square feet to acres converter

  1. Open the Convert menu and choose “Square feet (or any area) → acres”, “Acres → square feet” or “Any area unit → all units”.
  2. Type the number in Area to convert. The default is 10,000.
  3. Pick the unit next to the number: ft², yd², m², acre, ha, mi² or km².
  4. Read the result rows. The unit you typed is not repeated, unless it is the one you chose to convert to.
  5. Open How it was calculated to see the formula with your own numbers.
  6. For many areas, open More options and paste them into List of values (one per line), one number per line, in the unit you picked. A table with acres, ft², m² and ha is added. The list can have up to 1,000 lines.
  7. Below the results, the table “Common acreages” lists 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 5 and 10 acres in ft², m² and ha.
  8. Select Reset to restore the default values.

The example buttons above the form load “43,560 ft² → acres”, “1 acre → ft²”, “1 acre → m², ha…” and “10,000 m² → acres”. Copy result copies the result lines with a link, and Copy link copies the page address, which holds every input so the same calculation reopens. Print / save as PDF prints the inputs, results, steps and date.

How many square feet are in an acre?

An acre is 43,560 square feet. This figure is fixed, so every acre has the same area no matter what shape the land is. Half an acre is 21,780 ft², and a quarter acre is 10,890 ft². Searches such as “acre square footage” and “square footage per acre” all lead to this one number.

The shape can vary. A square of about 208.71 ft by 208.71 ft and a rectangle of 660 ft by 66 ft both cover 43,560 ft², so both are one acre.

How do you convert square feet to acres?

Divide the square feet by 43,560. In formula form, acres = square feet ÷ 43,560. To go the other way, multiply the acres by 43,560, so square feet = acres × 43,560. On a sheet or in a message, “ac” stands for acres and “sf” or “sqft” for square feet, so an ac to sf converter and a sqft to acre converter are the two directions of this tool.

For example, 10,000 ft² ÷ 43,560 = 0.2295684 acre. In reverse, 2.5 acres × 43,560 = 108,900 ft². The tool computes 43,560 ft² as exactly 1 acre.

Converting feet to acres: does it work?

Converting feet into acres only works for square feet. A length in feet is a line and has no area. To start from lengths, multiply the length by the width, both in feet, to get square feet, and then divide by 43,560. For example, 660 ft × 66 ft = 43,560 ft², which is 1 acre. If you need the area of an odd-shaped lot, use the acreage calculator.

How many square meters are in an acre?

One acre is 4,046.8564224 square meters, usually rounded to 4,046.86 m². To convert square meters to acres, divide by 4,046.86. For example, 5,000 m² ÷ 4,046.86 = 1.2355 acres.

A hectare is 10,000 m², and 1 hectare equals 2.47105 acres. Because 1 acre equals 0.404686 ha, you can also convert acres to hectares by multiplying by 0.404686.

How do you convert square feet to square meters?

Multiply the square feet by 0.09290304, since each square foot is 0.09290304 m². For example, 10,000 ft² × 0.09290304 = 929.0304 m². Dividing that by 4,046.8564 m² per acre gives 0.2295684 acre, the same answer as dividing the square feet by 43,560 directly.

How many acres are in a square mile?

A square mile is 640 acres. The tool also converts square miles and square kilometers, so you can read the same area in any of these units. For instance, 1 hectare comes to about 11,960 yd² in the result list.

Frequently asked questions

Is the converter free, and is anything I type uploaded?

Yes, the converter is free and needs no sign-up. It runs entirely in your browser, and nothing you type is uploaded.

Can I use the results in commercial work such as quotes and bids?

Yes. Results, steps and printouts may be used in any work, including commercial work such as quotes and invoices. No attribution is needed.

What does the warning “That is more than a million acres” mean?

The tool shows this warning when the result is over a million acres, which often means the unit is wrong. Check whether you chose square feet or acres in the unit menu, and the result will update.

Why does every result show zero?

The tool shows the warning “The area is zero, so every result is zero” when the number in Area to convert is zero. Type the area you want to convert to get a non-zero result.

Which result row should I use?

Use the row for the unit you need. Acres are the most common land measure in the US, while hectares and square meters are standard in metric work.

Does the converter tell me how much fertilizer or seed to apply per acre?

No. It converts areas and does not recommend rates. The product label, a soil test, an agronomist, the extension service or a veterinarian gives the actual recommendation.

Can I keep a calculation to reopen later?

Select Copy link to copy the page address, which holds every input, so the same calculation reopens. Print / save as PDF keeps the inputs, results, steps and date.
